Under 14 player Alastair Dyer won the U18 Division.
U10 player Vincent Horton won the U12 Division.
Second place in the U18 division was Thomas Hendry, who has had a spectacular
rise in chess rating (playing strength) recently, and with a string of wins
behind him was the one to watch. However, Alastair has had his own meteoric
rise, and wasn't going to let Thomas have it all his own way!
Congratulations to Owen Short, who was the youngest entrant in the under 18
division, yet he was the only one able to score a draw against Alastair.
Second place in the under 12 division was an extremely close finish, with Max Rintoul
running ahead of the field undefeated on day one of the tournament.
Jamie Briant managed to duplicate Max's unbeaten run, but this time on day two.
Both players ended up winning 7 of their 9 games.
Jackson Jolly was a giant slayer, winning an amazing game against U12 champion
Vincent Horton. (see below)
The top scoring U18 girl player was Nina Horton, winning some spectacular games (see
below).
Last years' girls champion Meg Briant, was unable to contest the title this year.
Alina Krasnicki was the top scoring U12 girl player, winning games against players several years older than herself, both boys and girls.
The standard of play was impressive, both from the technical ability of players,
and also of the extremely good sportsmanship between opponents.
This year saw the introduction of timed games with increments. Each player started
with 25 minutes, and was awarded an extra 10 seconds per move. The advantage
of this system was that players were able to slow down and think about their
moves. It also avoided the last rush of frantic moves that can often spoil a
well played out game under standard time controls.
